Good Fridays: Life is Short, Celebrate Now Playlist

Do you have a special song you play when something good happens? What about when you need a little push to keep going? If you do, I'd love if you shared it in the comments.

Our society is all about the bigger better deal. Once we accomplish something we don't spend long basking in the light of our accomplishment before we're feverisly tackling the next project. We need to take stock of what we've actually gotten done and give ourselves the pat on the back we deserve, take a moment to drink it all in. We need to celebrate.

I've been holding onto a song I planned to post on the blog when I got an agent and then a book deal, but I've decided that good things need to be celebrated now. I don't know when I'll get an agent, let alone a book deal, but it's just a matter of time. Imagine Dragons' "On Top of the World" is my song. The lyrics describe so perfectly what I've been going through, and will achieve if I keep going. Hope you enjoy it too.

Life is short. Celebrate now. And share it.

Hope - I Have It

I have to confess something. I've been kind of hiding from blogger for the past two weeks. I've been going through quite a lot with my MS and plans for my creative future. Gut-wrenching, self-doubting, terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things. Now I finally feel like I'm coming out of the woods, blinking at the sun.

To determine what was wrong with my MS, I put myself through Query Letter Hell (see Absolute Write forum). I picked the brains of family and friends. I dove into happy distractions like movies and games for comfort. I felt horribly sorry for myself. I cried on a few shoulders. And I learned something.

I learned that I need to pull back and stop querying this novel for awhile. It was a hard realization and I feel a little like a runner dropping out of a race. But I have a plan, or at least the vague, hazy start of one.

I'm not going to tell you all my plan in case it flops horribly, but the glimmer of hope is back.

Good Fridays: Plot Saved and Rib Located!

Since my last post, my dislocated rib is located again and I'm feeling much better. Thanks to everyone who wished me a speedy recovery!

Boogey portrait preview
Within the past week, along with watching tons of Red Dwarf, I've also gotten creatively productive. I started a digital portrait of my MC Lividia's Boogeyman to match one I later plan to paint of her. Here's a cropped preview of the WIP---->

I've been listening to a ton of music, and brainstorming like a mad woman - with the help of my grad school CP Jenn. She's a game designer, and she's miraculous with plot ideas and character arcs. She helped me make the connection between a seemingly innocuous character in the first book and a major villain in the rest of the series, which is a really big deal. A series always seems easier to manage when more than one headspace is host to it. Without her input I'd probably still be dragging along a character who was nothing more than a plot device.

Writers can get tunnel vision sometimes and I know I did over my first novel. Thanks to Jenn, I have a greater sense of freedom with what I can really do with the series (anything I want!) and what characters I can use to fulfill which purpose. The plot has gotten a lot deeper and more complicated than it was before I talked to her.

I went from feeling like this with my story:

to feeling like this:

So, that's my highlight for this Good Fridays post: my CP Jenn. She doesn't have a blog, but she does have a Deviantart Gallery.

Has your plot ever been saved by a brilliant creative partner?
